Our history
Family Tree, established in 1984 as Family Tree Magazine, has been published for more than 25 years. It was started by Michael and Mary Armstrong, using a portable Brother typewriter on their dining room table. In 1986 they moved the operation into a brick outbuilding. On outgrowing that, 1991 saw another move, this time into two units on the local industrial estate in Ramsey and then finally, in 1993, they transferred to the present headquarters at 61 Great Whyte, Ramsey, near Huntingdon, Cambridgeshire. At this time four more family members joined the partnership and the company became Armstrong, Boon & Marriott (Publishing).
In 2004 the company, now known as ABM Publishing Ltd, was proud to receive the prestigious Prince Michael of Kent Award, for introducing family history to a wide audience for 20 years. This occasional award, made for distinguished and outstanding services to genealogy, is recommended by the Society of Genealogists. Previously only the Family Records Centre had received the award in 2000, and only the Genealogical Society of Utah, FreeBMD and Alex Graham, CEO of television production company Wall to Wall, which makes the popular BBC television series Who Do You Think You Are?, have received the award since, in 2006, 2007 and 2011 respectively.
In 2009 a special issue of Family Tree magazine was published to celebrate 25 years in print, titled 25 years of Family Tree Magazine. It can be purchased, with around 1,000 other items, including books, binders, maps, charts and other accessories from our online shop at www.familyhistorybookshop.co.uk.
In 2011 Family Tree became available as a digital magazine, in addition to the print edition. Family Tree is available on PC and Mac via www.pocketmags.com and on smart devices via the App Store and Android Marketplace.
