Last Saturday my aunt brought her obviously adorable new puppy home to Kent. Four days later she’d fallen over, broken her ankle, and the puppy is now quasi-adopted by my mum - and living an estimated 150 miles away in Cambs.

Reminds me of family history, looking for people so young, that you think they must still live at home, but employment, poverty, death, lack of space, an elderly relative needing looking after, etc, all conspired to put them in the wrong house on census night - making them all the harder to find decades later.

Still, we wouldn’t want it easy anyway, would we?

too busy

When I started this blog a couple of weeks ago, I thought I would be doing it every day. Sadly not - just too busy at the mo.

However, doing fun things: from soldiers, seamstresses, and sailors in the Merchant Navy, Belinda and I are getting the Family Tree Magazine July issue articles ready for design. There’s a story of present-day perseverance and a son’s quest to claim his father’s medals, and one of endurance from the 19th century, with the blindingly (literally) hard work of the Victorian seamstresses, sewing themselves into an early grave to clothe the society beauties.

So, putting it in perspective, I shouldn’t whinge about being busy.

new scientist on memories

This week’s New Scientist has a pretty startling article on memory. Seemingly the greater our store of memories and the greater detail we remember them in, then the more readily do we become able to imagine our future. This is said quite a lot in family history - ie finding out about where you’re coming from being important to people in their lives day, so we shouldn’t be surprised. Still, it’s interesting to think about the usefulness of our memories.

This is very exciting - writing my first family history blog ever!

There’s a lot a want to put down - things I mean to find out (but just need to get on with), anecdotes I mustn’t forget, half-understood stories from our family past.

I’m hoping that the rest of my family will pile in too, and add their thoughts and stories, and then we’ll have a treasure of family info.

I also suspect that this blogging malarkey is going to be very addictive - and a little self-indulgent (but not fattening).
