New site for this blog coming along nicely!!

Posted in Uncategorized at 10:32 am by rootsresearcher

I pottered about on the new blog site yesterday and tried to make some order with the Pages and Categories.  Of course I haven’t been able to move much stuff from here over to there just yet, but hopefully will get more on the new site in the next few days.

The new address is:  http://rootsresearcher.wordpress.com and it is also called So That’s Where I Get It From.  Once everything is sorted out at the new blog site, I will leave this one here and put a link between the two in case anyone still wants to come and look over here at this one!

When I originally started this genealogy blog, I did not give a thought that one day I might want to move it and improve it.  I now find that that is what I am doing when really I have no idea how to transfer one website over to another.  I think I shall just be doing a lot of copying and pasting, or re-doing pages over there based on pages over here and re-uploading photos and so on.  Should be fun don’t you think???  ;-)

If any of you come here while I am in the process of moving the blog, please look at the other one, even if it does not have a great deal on it yet, and let me know what you think of it or let me know any helpful suggestions as to the best way of moving everything here to there.

Hopefully it won’t be long til I have the other site set up as I would like it to be and then it won’t be long until I start adding the things that didn’t even get to come here!!

 Catch up with you soon.

Time for a Spring Clean, Tidy up and Upgrade!!

Posted in Uncategorized at 4:18 am by rootsresearcher

It is almost a year since I was last here and I am amazed that it has been so long!  I never intended to stay away so long, and have so many things I want to add.  But what with the swarm of bees that came down a chimney and stayed in our bedroom (thousands of honey bees, ugh, ugh, eeeeek, then trying to get rid of them, sleeping for over a week on armchairs in the living room and then going through everything to get rid of dead bodies and make sure there were no live ones left hiding somewhere it took several weeks of disruption before we were back to normal.  Because of that we were exhausted and so I did not play on the computer much.

Then followed the leaking radiator in our hallway which soaked the carpet, soaked a cupboard nearby and would not stop leaking although we even turned the water off!  We managed to stop the leak except for a trickle and then we had to wait over a week for a plumber and then they decided that we needed a new radiator and it would be a couple of weeks before they could come back, busy you know!!

So we spent most days emptying small containers because of the trickle that was still coming out.  Eventually the plumber came back, fitted the new radiator and everything seemed fine.  Except, the radiators were hot all through the house even though they were not on!  (And this was in the summer).  Even our cold water was hot!!  Something was wrong so we called the plumber back but he was busy and it would be another couple of weeks before he could come.  When he did return, it seems he had switched something one way in the boiler to fit the new radiator, but did not switch it back when he had finished!!

Then I was hit with flu and because it was so bad we were thinking that maybe I had Swine Flu.  It turned out thankfully that it wasn’t but I was a bit poorly for a couple of weeks or so.

For many weeks and months there was so much happening that I just did not get to come here and add all the things I wanted to.

So, now I am making a fresh start.  I want to get the blog more organised so it is easier for anyone to find something particular they are interested in and to have some order to the whole blog.  Which is why this is now a Spring Clean and Tidy Up!!  The Upgrade??  Well, I am thinking of doing the blog at another site so will probably set that up and then gradually move everything here over to it. (Once I work out how to do that!! I’m hoping it isn’t too difficult and I definitely don’t want to lose any of what I have here already).

I shall be pottering about a bit over the next few days to reorganise this blog and then I will start adding more things as I always intended.  Thanks for your patience and for keeping on popping by even though there hasn’t been much extra to see lately.

Catch up with you soon - it really won’t be as long as last time!!  ;-)

Back Again Next Day!!! That’s Good, Isn’t It???

Posted in Uncategorized at 10:46 am by rootsresearcher

Well here I am again, so soon after my last blog!!  I have been very good and placed here lots of Blog Charts (11 in total on my paternal side) and added a few things here for my maternal side too, including some ancestor photos.

I am trying to re-organise things a bit better - I really need to do this as there is so much to add.  I am pleased the way the Blog Charts appear to have turned out here.  It is so much quicker and easier for me to do it like this.  If you have any problems with this new way, let me know although I am hoping that this way suits you too!!

I shall be back very soon with some more things to add here, and also the “news” I mentioned yesterday about Johntininay Read and “Digby” Read.

Happy hunting through all the new things and if there is anything particularly good that you like, or really not good, or just some plain old mistakes send me an email (cos you can’t comment here now cos of those pesky spammers) and let me know.

Catch up with you very soon!!  ;-)

Oh dear! I’ve been away much too long!!

Posted in Uncategorized at 6:13 pm by rootsresearcher

Well, what can I say?  My New Year’s Resolution has gone right out the window and I had such very good intentions to keep up with this blog on a regular basis.

I am here now and will try not to leave it so long next time.  But at least I think I have brought an improvement with me that hopefully will please you all who read this.

For the Family Tree Charts section I started, it was going to take me much too long to make the charts and then add them.  I did make a start and had a couple more to add to this blog, but I have now worked out what I hope will be a better and quicker way to add the details of descent of family lines that you can clearly see and easily access for yourselves for those lines that interest you most.

So I have added a few today, still under the Family Tree Charts section, and will be able to add more soon as it is fairly quick for me to do.

There is also “news”, roughly speaking, on Johntininay Read (mentioned in an earlier blog) and on “Digby” Read, he of the Eureka Moment!!  But as I want to get some of these new types of Blog Charts up, I will tell you this “news” very soon, hopefully in a day or two.

As always, if there is more info you want to know that you can’t find here, just let me know and I will pass on any details to you.

Oh yes, just in case you are wondering why Comments is closed, I was being inundated with sex junk, rude nude junk, viagra junk and lots of things like that, and although I have the comments moderated so they could not appear on the page without me seeing them first, it was just too too much to have to put up with!!  So, the spammers have unfortunately won the day, by closing my comments to those of you who are genuinely interested in this blog, but then again, they now have to go and find some other unfortunate person’s blog to spam their rubbish!!!!!  (Rant over - sorry)!

I’m Back Again So Quickly!! I Can’t Believe It!

Posted in Uncategorized at 6:47 pm by rootsresearcher

I have totally surprised myself with getting back to this blog so quickly after my last one!  Perhaps my New Year’s Resolution is kicking in at last?  Let’s hope so!

I will be adding a couple more family tree charts on this visit, and made a list of how many more I want to add.  Fourteen so far!  They are not put together yet, but I will do a few very soon and add those hopefully soon too.

I’m being very good and getting lots of bits and pieces ready to add here, so don’t forget to just keep popping in any time to see what I have added.

Just Added the First of the Family Tree Charts!!

Posted in Uncategorized at 12:59 pm by rootsresearcher

If you look at the menu on the right, you will see a heading Family Tree Charts - Blog Chart 1.  This is the first of the Charts I will put here on my blog, that will hopefully give you more information to what you have already.  This one starts with my 8 x great grandparents John Read and Katharine Lovjoy.

It shows basic details, year of birth and death (if I have discovered it), any marriages, any children and the places where these events occurred.  For some of the people shown I have much more information but for some others, very little extra to what is shown.  If you want to know more just ask me.

These charts I place here are to at least share some of the details I have about the Read family in particular.  I hope to add Blog Chart 2 very soon as that has details of Cozens Read’s parents and siblings.

And please don’t worry if you think the Chart doesn’t look very clear or sharp.  That’s only how it appears here on the blog, I couldn’t make it clearer, but if you save it to your computer, when you click on the image you save it will appear very clear, maybe a bit big, but you should not have any difficulties if you print a copy of it.  Of course, if you have any problems with it let me know and I will do what I can to help.

A New Year and “New” Cousins Found Already!!

Posted in Uncategorized at 11:55 am by rootsresearcher

Well it looks like all my good intentions of keeping up with this blog without long gaps in it didn’t last very long!  So much for New Year Resolutions.  I am amazed we are almost to the end of January and this is my first blog since just before Christmas.

I hope you all had a great Christmas and that the New Year will be wonderful for you.  Part of the reason I haven’t been here before now is because on Christmas Day I developed the winter sickness bug that’s going around and was not at all well for a couple or three weeks or so.  I’ve recovered from that but as my health is not that good anyway, little things like winter sickness thingys just set me back a fair bit!!

But I have also been sorting things out for this blog, cos I really have so much to say here and so much info to share.  I have been transferring lots of family history data from my poor old, old computer that is probably on it’s last legs, to my current computer so that I can use some of it in this blog.  It is taking a bit of time to do but I should be a bit better organised for this blog once I have completed that task.

I am delighted to have already found some “new” cousins this year.  One I found through another of my cousins who did not think she was connected to us, but she is!!  And others I have found through Genes Reunited.  I hadn’t visited that site for a while so had a little look at it a few days ago and was amazed to see just how many people were interested in my Read family at Lower Winchendon!

Many of you have been paying me wonderful compliments for this blog.  Thankyou so much for that.  I know I chatter on here, but it’s nice to know that others do find it interesting too!!  I still have so many bits and pieces I want to add and I am going to try and add some tree charts here too because to print my actual family tree would take 1,000 or so A4 pages and then they would have to be stuck together, so that’s just not really possible to do.

If I can get some sort of charts here on the static pages, that hopefully will help compare notes between ourselves.  I also want to add a “new” cousins photo gallery so I am collecting photos of you with your other halfs to adorn these pages!  I will try to put a bit about how we are connected which might put some of you in touch with others that you don’t know about yet!

I should sign off now, as I must get cracking on getting other things put up here for everyone to look at.  Do keep popping back, because I will try to add bits more quickly.  I’m just sorry there is no particular order in the way I am adding details, copies of things and so on, but hey, you never know what you will come across just by dipping in every now and then!!  ;-)

I hope you receive some great pressies!  I know I will!!  I am very lucky because each year my family take my wish-list of lots of different genealogical bits and pieces and always, without fail, manage to obtain just the things I really wanted!

This year I can look forward to receiving Parish Register Transcripts, Wills Indexes, Marriage Licence Bonds, Books about People and Places and some various bits of genealogical storage items.  The beauty of receiving these types of gifts, is that I can dip into them year after year, I find information I really wanted and they are just so very useful.

I remember the first year my dear stepdaughter Claire and her husband bought me an ancient old book from a book collector.  She hadn’t realised that it was an old book and when it arrived was dismayed to find the pages a bit tatty, marks on it and even some writing inside!!  She telephoned her Dad because she thought there had been some mistake!  He told her that was just how I wanted it (especially if any books are pre 1850) and that I would adore it and so she was very relieved and also now enjoys dipping into the old books I have now collected.

I am also very thankful to my family for getting me just the gifts I really want, because many of these things I would not be able to afford and now have a terrific collection of various items and just thoroughly enjoy them so much.

So I hope you get all you wish for and if you are really addicted to genealogy like me, and I think ALL family historians are addicted ;-)  then you will also be very happy if you get similar gifts to those I receive each year.

Well, I think it is now very unlikely I shall be chatting here again before Christmas, so have a lovely holiday and I look forward to seeing you in the New Year.  :-)

Copies of old documents now added on separate pages!

Posted in Uncategorized at 11:33 am by rootsresearcher

I have been spending the last few days trying to organise the many copies of old documents I have because I thought it might be nice to show some here on my blog.

I have now made separate pages for each of the few I have added just now - see the menu on the right to access them.  I hope you find them of interest.  The copies themselves might not appear too clear here on my blog, but I have also done a transcript which you will find underneath them if you have any difficulty reading the copies.

I shall very soon also be adding some extra pages showing some of my ancestor photos too.  Again, they will be found in the menu on the right.  As well as being addicted to genealogy, I am also a bit of a creative person, so have displayed my ancestor photos in digital scrapbooking style.  The idea was to put them into a digital scrapbook album, but here they will be shown separately.  Hope you enjoy seeing them!

I need to get some sort of order when writing about my ancestors!!

Posted in Uncategorized at 11:24 am by rootsresearcher

I have so many things to say on here about the many years of research I have done on my ancestors and have been puzzling about the best way to organise writing about them.  I keep thinking of different things I want to write about, but feel that would dodge about too much, so would be difficult to follow or know who I am talking about!!

So, even though I have written a little before now about some of my ancestors, I really need to start at the beginning, which would be more or less the earliest date I have managed to get back to.

Here we go then, back to about 1645 which would have been roughly when my 8 x great grandfather John READ was born.

************************************

1600s-read-family.jpg

This is a representation of how my 8 x great grandfather John READ and his family would have looked (style of clothes, hair etc) towards the end of the 1600s.  They were not a poor family so their style of clothes depicts this.

******************************************

The family name goes back in the Caversham registers to 1600 when the Baptisms start.  Although there is one burial of a READ child in 1599.  The register itself goes back to about 1567 or thereabouts so it looks like my family appeared in Caversham from somewhere else maybe?

My problem is that there is a four year gap in the register so if my 8 x great grandfather was born about then, I don’t know which of about five men are his father.  Or it could be that he was actually born/baptised elsewhere and came to Caversham because of the other relatives there.

I had the bright idea of checking Wills for READs in Caversham, but there are only three in existence (one an admon) even though this family lived at Caversham for almost three hundred years.  The first Will is dated 1625 so too early to be of any help with my 8 x great grandfather, but certainly good for the details in it for the earlier family of READs there;  the second Will was my 8 x great grandmother’s (Katharine nee LOVJOY) and names her children, except one who had died a few years before she made it and the Will is very helpful in that it gives her daughters’ married names (but that throws up a mystery in itself) and she also leaves me with more questions being asked because she leaves some of her children one shilling and some ten pounds each.  She also states in the Will that it is being made to save arguments later!!  So, what was going on there???     The third Will, well, Admon was for my 8 x great grandfather John READ and is witnessed by his son Edward (rather than his eldest (living at that time) son Johntininay - thereby goes another puzzle) and is also signed by a Richard READ in what looks like a shaky hand, but he does not fit with any of the READs at Caversham so is maybe from somewhere else.  Is he my 8 x great grandfather’s brother, maybe a bit more senior in years so with the shaky handwriting?  Questions!  Puzzles!   Mysteries!

It’s wonderful to see the old Wills and the information in the Parish Registers and other documents, but however much detail you get from these about each individual ancestor, they just seem to throw up more and more questions and puzzles.

So, where do I look next to find out where my 8 x great grandfather was from and who his parents were?  It took me ten years or so and a search through over 300 Parish Registers to find where my 6 x great grandfather (Cozens READ) was from and who his parents were, so that was terrific when I managed to move further back in time after hitting the brick wall for those ten years!!  But, as you can see, I only got back to my 8 x great grandfather before I hit another brick wall!!   :-(
