Published May 31st, 2007 in Scottish GenealogyI am working on my Conacher family originating on the Athol Estates in Perthshire around 1535, the family have apparently arrived from Ireland around that time. I live in Perthshire and have studied the old Parish Records for the area and it would seem that all Con(n)achers there are descended from brothers : Mungo, Thomas, John, Charles, Peter and Alexander, there could be others as the oldest records are hard to read.

Interesting. There are some Conachers that were early settlers in Northern New Brunswick, in Restigouche county. I believe they may be from Logierait area. There was a David Conacher that was from Logierait. He married a Margaret McIntosh.
Hello. My father William Conacher and his sister Ruth were born in Glasgow in 1924 and 1932 respectively. Their father was John Conacher, and his father was William Conacher. William Conacher had brothers, including one called Mungo, and their father (my great, great grandfather) was also called John.
This branch of the Conacher family at least seems to be musical, as my grandfather, father, my sisters and myself are all musical. I met a talented musician in Edinburgh in the 80s called David Allison, who now lives in Glasgow, and was interested to hear that his grandfather was called Mungo Conacher.
My aunt Ruth has made considerable efforts to research the Conacher family tree, and the only Mungo she could find from this time period was my great grandfather’s brother. Therefore I think it’s likely that David Allison is my second cousin once removed, unless you know of any other Mungo Conacher from two or three generations ago.
My aunt, my sister and myself would be very interested to know what else you manage to find out about our family history, and I would be delighted to receive emails from you. However please don’t publish my email address - like most people I already have to deal with a lot of annoying junk email!
best wishes,
M Conacher
My maternal Grandfather was Mungo Conacher. I thought he was the son of a gamekeeper near Luss by Loch Lomond, but could be mistaken.
Would be interested in hearing if he was from Logierait.
He went into banking, becoming the head of Martin’s Bank, which later became part of Barclays, and was awarded the CBE for his work.
He lived in Birkenhead near Liverpool.
Best,
David
Whist researching my family history I have discovered that James Campbell married Grizel Conachar - daughter of Patrick Conachar of Nether Ballyouken, Logierait on 30th July 1774, Logierait.
I cannot find a birth or baptismal entry for her around 1735 ( James Campbell’s birth date) and she obviously died after December 1791 (birth of last child) and before 1841 census!
I wondered if she was the daughter of Patrick Campbell who was buried October 1765 in Logierait of Easterlyne, Logierait and Grissel Cameron or McInroy.
Can anyone help?
Heather
in reply to David Allison, this looks like your Mungo:
1901 CONACHER MUNGO M LUSS /DUNBARTON 499/00 0004
Mungo was born March 24th 1901.
His father was Tom Conacher, Gamekeeper at Highfields, Luss and his mother was Margaret Hannah and they were married June 5th 1900 at Highfields.
This could be Toms birth as his wife died near Dumfries:
1877 CONACHER THOMAS M LANGHOLM /DUMFRIES 839/00 0155
Hi David,
I have Mungo born 1880 in Dumfries – 1881 census - son of Mungo and Helen Keir.
I also have his brother Thomas m Margaret Hannah
Mungo was born in Dowally in 18.04.1847 and married Helen in Caputh. They also had a daughter Christina.
Mungo was the son of Thomas b 1798 and Jane or Jean Sim married in 1845 in Dowally
Thomas was the son of Mungo 1774 and Margaret Borrie m Dowally 1797 who also had a David 1799, Mungo 1802 and Christian 1804. The big question is whether Margaret dies and Mungo remarried Christian Keir – anyone know the answer?
Mungo 1774 was the son of Mungo who married Margaret Reid in Logierait and Little Dunkeld in 1766 they also had Thomas, Ann and Donald.
My husband’s family descend directly from Thomas, through even more Mungos. They are all on my “Conacher family tree” on Ancestry.
I could of course be wrong on any of this and would welcome your thoughts. My Husband, Iain, seems to recall mention of a St, Martins bank manager.
Look forward to hearing from you both – where do you fit in Willie?
A few notes on the Connacher surname.
Johne Campbell married Girsel Connacher possibley abt 1673 in the Logierait Parish. Johne was christened 1 Feb 1652 Logierait. Parents Donald Campbell and Katherine McAfersoune.
Johne and Girsels children:
Johne Campbell Christened 3 April 1674 Logierait
Girsal Campbell born abt 1676 Logierait = married Donald McGaw 16 November 1695 Logierait. Girsal dies abt 1699.
Robert Campbell Christened December 22 1678 Logierait = married Janet Chrystie both of Logierait Parish.
Hope this helps - transcribed from some very records of the Logierait Parish.
Hi, I have traced while researching my McDonald family a Charles Conachar who married a Margaret McIntosh in Logierait in 1761, their family John born 1763, Andrew born 1765, Janet born 1770 and David born 1772 all born in Logierait.
Janet married James McDonald in Logierait in 1792.
Hope this may be of help to someone.
Re Mungo Conacher and Margaret Reid. Their son Mungo married Margaret Borrie in 1797 at Dowally, Perthshire. Children Thomas, David, Mungo and Christian. Christian married William Sim, born 1805 Dowally, died 1876 Dowally. Their son William Sim b.c. 1834 Dowally married Isabella Cameron in 1861. They had a son Thomas Sim who left the area and went to live in Dores, Inverness-shire.
I am looking for a Conacher connection. My grandfather was John Alexander Conacher (born Dec. 25, 1876), his father was James Conacher (& Helen Kennedy). He was born Apr. 13, 1841 @ Dowally, Perth, Scotland. John came to Canada around 1904 & was married to Mary Smith.
The connection I am looking for is a Benjamin Conacher (son of Mungo ?). Ben was in Canada (Toronto) & raised a family of 10 children. He was married to Elizabeth (?). Their sons, Lionel & Charles were great sportsmen.
Who was Ben’s father ? I have been told that his father & my grandfather were 1st cousin’s.
Can anyone help me with this - all answers are appreciated.
I have a Marjorie Connacher who was married to Adam Ferguson from Logiereit Scotland. Marjorie was also from Scotland but I have no parents for them. Adam and Marjorie both died little after 1796, they had 5 children and lived in Atholville, NB.. Canada.
I would love to have more information on both of them. Their children all born in Logierait Scotland, Robert born april 17, 1768, Alexander born Oct 31, 1763, Helen born Nov 4, 1765, Margaret born Feb 18, 1771 and Elizabeth Ann born Jan 19, 1778. At least Robert , Alexander and Elizabeth died in Atholville and are buried in the Athol House Cemetery.
My 3G grandfather was Alexander Conacher of Dunkeld (1803-1873), Perthshire. He was by all accounts a difficult man, a harsh disciplinarian, a strict Calvinist and lived a very austere life. Two of his sons, Alexander and John emigrated to Australia in the 1850s, at least in part to get away from their father. At the time of emigrating, the two brothers decided to change their name to Scott which was their mother’s maiden name. We have only recently uncovered their real family name.
By the time to sons emigrated, the family had moved to Hawick in Roxburghshire. I have in my possession a letter written by Alexander Conacher to his sons in the colonies in April, 1855 to notify them of the death of their sister, Susan. This letter has news of other family members, including Alexander’s father, John Conagher who was known as “father in the Glack” (as he lived in the Glack, near Dunkeld) as well as village gossip. I would be happy to provide transcripts of this letter to genuine researchers of the Conagher clan.
