A Tommy in the FamilyReview extract by Karen Clare. Read the full review in Family Tree May, on sale 16 April 2014.
A plethora of new titles have been published to mark the centenary of the outbreak of World War I, and there’s no doubt most have their worth and place on our bookshelves, but Keith Gregson’s new book is refreshingly aimed squarely at family historians. The author uses case studies from friends and family to demonstrate how to undertake First World War family history research – and the result is inspirational. Be prepared for tear-jerking (and heart-warming) moments as Gregson teases out individual human interest stories to show ‘as many ways as possible of discovering the ancestral information’. You can take on board all the advice on essential research sources and methods, but there’s more here to applaud than that: it’s a real, tangible sense of what can be achieved by bringing these lost family stories to light.

WIN! The Sinking of RMS Tayleur

COMPETITION CLOSED. Congratulations to our winner Roger Owen, Bedfordshire.

Find out what drove people to travel by sea at a time when ‘drunken captains, maggoty bread, monster rats, thick, green-algae-clogged drinking water and death at sea were commonplace’ and discover the lost story of the ‘Victorian Titanic’. We have one copy of The Sinking of RMS Tayleur by Gill Hoffs (details below) to give away – for your chance to win simply sign up for our newsletter using the form below.

Everyone who signs up for our newsletter will also receive our free guide, How to write your family story.

The-sinking-of-RMS-TayleurReview extract by Karen Clare. Read the full review in Family Tree April, on sale 21 March 2014.
The sinking of the White Star Line’s RMS Tayleur was one of the worst shipwrecks in Ireland’s history, but the tragedy has been all but forgotten, perhaps eclipsed by the Titanic disaster 58 years later. The Tayleur left Liverpool bound for Australia on 19 January 1854, packed with emigrants hopeful of a better life down under. But her iron hull prevented her compasses from working and, lost in a storm in the Irish Sea two days later, she was cruelly dashed against jagged rocks on Lambay Island, just yards from safety. In less than an hour, over half the 650 people recorded on board were dead, including many women and children. On this, the 160th anniversary of the tragedy, the author focuses on the heart-rending individual stories of passengers and crew, including some of the heroes of the disaster. She tells their stories using first-hand accounts and newspaper reports, weaving their experiences into a back story of the woefully inadequate safety measures on emigrant ships of this era.
