The records, certificates, and directories that we often search through when exploring our family history hold vital clues to our past, but there is nothing quite as evocative or poignant as a photograph of your ancestors. This is especially true when it comes to images of ancestors who served in the military. With the 80th anniversary of VE Day fast approaching, now is the perfect time to reflect on their legacy. We spoke to Phil Anderson, of Photo Fantastic Restorations, to find out how these precious pieces of the past can be restored and protected for future generations.

We've all seen them, probably handled them. Those dog-eared photographs that have faded in the light, been torn at the edges, or marked with countless fingerprints as they pass through the generations. We all know how important these images are, especially to our family history, but often when we come across such photos, they are in need of some attention before it's too late.

Thanks to the advances in technology, it's now possible to restore these photographs and as many of us will know, this restoration and even colourisation of old photos is increasingly a vital step in recording our family history.

But making sure these images are restored correctly requires more than just technology and an AI plug-in, it needs a dedicated expert with the knowledge.

The Unknown solider: Victory in Europe (VE Day) takes place on 8 May and marks the Allied victory in Europe, while Victory over Japan (VJ Day), on 15 August, marks the end of the war in the Far East. Phil exaplins: "This photograph shows an unknown solider from WW1, I restored this image from a Broken Glass and damaged Glass plate photo I found in an auction as a tribute to the unknown soldiers that have fallen in all battles."

Restoring treasured memories

Phil Anderson, of Photo Fantastic Restorations has been restoring photographs for many years and is well aware of how important they can be.

"Your photographs are more than just images," he says, "they are fragments of history, echoes of laughter, and reminders of the people we hold dear. Whether faded, torn, or time-worn, each one holds a story worth preserving and restoring."

As a sole trader, Phil takes immense pride in restoring these treasured memories with precision and care.

"Using my expertise in Photoshop, modern restoration techniques, and a meticulous eye for detail, I breathe new life into old photographs," Phil tells us, "allowing you to relive precious moments and pass them on for generations to come."

Adding colour and ensuring historical accuracy

Phil's restoration services include enhancing colours, reconstructing missing sections, and repairing cracks and damage. Perhaps the most valuable part of the service is his dedication to historical accuracy when adding colour to an image.

"This process is rooted in detailed research," he says. "Consulting historical archives, engaging with experts in military uniforms and historical dress, and, where possible, using specialist equipment to take direct colour swatches from original items."

As Phil is very proud to tell us, this level of authenticity and attention to detail sets his work apart from automated AI colourisation tools. Each restored image is delivered as a true-to-life digital representation or as a high-quality Giclée print – preserving your memories in stunning clarity.

"It is this and my love for the history of photography and giving back a memory to someone that inspires me to work in photographic restoration," he adds. "My background of 30 years working in film and television special effects, visual effects and animation, has definitely helped, and now I'm delighted to be using my experience in photographic restoration."
