Join us, as Judith Rhodes will be asking us to reflect on our research roadblocks, and ask ourselves whether they really are ‘brickwalls’ – or whether there may be something we can do about them
Often in family history research we use the term 'hit a brick wall' but have we truly hit the proverbial brick wall?
In this presentation we will look at what may be perceived as a brick wall, what we think the obstacle is and some strategies to break down the wall.
This may be a simple peep around the side of the wall to see a missed opportunity that has created what we believe to be a brick wall; it may be necessary to put in a bit more effort with a visit to archives to explore the physical documents to remove the obstacle that only exists by depending on online resources.
Asking for help from other researchers is not something many of us tend to do, family historians like challenges so we will look at who and how to ask for help; what may seem to be an obstacle might just need a different pair of eyes.
Finally, we will look at documentation; when hours have been spent and rabbit holes explored it is too easy to forget to note each and every step that has been taken that has led to the brick wall; the peep round the side, the people we have asked for help and the final moment of triumph when finding a chink of light in the wall. We need to know how to put the wall back together again.
