How to trace the history of alms houses
How to trace the history of alms houses
Carol Kerry-Green will be speaking on ‘Almshouses: Their history, architecture & records’ at Family Tree Live
Introducing Carol Kerry-Green’s talk:
Carol Kerry-Green’s presentation will cover a history of almshouses from their beginnings as hospitals for the sick in the 11th century.
Tracing the various types of almshouses, and who founded and who funded them, Carol Kerry-Green will also discuss how to find records of almshouses to trace information relevant to an ancestor living in an almshouse. Perhaps you have found an ancestor, listed as residing in an almshouse, on the census records and are keen to learn more about their lives and circumstances.
Alternatively maybe you have a local history interest and would like to learn about the varying architectural styles over the centuries – her talk will be covering this too.
Using examples of different types and showcasing some of the records that can be found, she will demonstrate the sources that are available for tracing the history of alms houses over the centuries.
In many towns and villages almshouses are, to this day, visible dwellings on our streets. Find out about them and the valuable role they’ve played in society over the centuries.
This talk is for you if you have found an ancestor in an almshouse in the records, if you’re keen to learn more about the buildings themselves, or if you are curious to learn more about role of almshouses in society in times gone by.
Suitable for many levels of family history experience.
