How to use the census to trace your family history
How to use the census to trace your family history
David Annal will be speaking on ‘Counting the people: census returns online’ at Family Tree Live
Introducing David Annal’s talk:
The census is an invaluable resource for family historians, covering – as it does – people from all walks of life. In addition to providing a comprehensive record of the population it provides the family history researcher with key clues – names, dates, addresses, occupations and family relationships. These are all crucial clues to help us piece together a family tree and to get a richer feeling for our ancestors’ lives, homes and communities.
A census of England and Wales has been taken every 10 years since 1801, and the returns for 1841 to 1911 are accessible online, but finding our ancestors isn’t always easy.
David Annal’s talk will provide essential search techniques and vital clues to successfully using the census records for family history.
The census is likely to be one of the records that you use early on in your family history sleuthing, but it’s also one that you will return to time and again over the years, mining it for the genealogical and historical clues it holds about your ancestors.
This talk is for you if you are keen to learn more about how to search the census successfully to trace your ancestors.
Suitable for many levels of family history experience, beginner to intermediate.
