Understanding shell shock & First World War trauma

Dr N Hunt & Dr L Allwork will be speaking on ‘Shell shock stories and beyond: trauma and the First World War’ at Family Tree Live

Introducing Dr N Hunt & Dr L Allwork’s talk:

How do historians research the lives of First World War shell shocked soldiers? How do memoirs show evidence of trauma? Discover more at this talk.

Join Professor Nigel Hunt (University of Nottingham) and Dr Larissa Allwork (University of Derby) for this talk exploring histories of trauma from the First World War.

How do we research the lives of shell-shocked soldiers?

How do we read personal memoirs and diaries with an eye to uncovering evidence of traumatic stress?

Using primary sources, some of which have been brought to light by the 1914-1918 centenary commemorations, this talk will provide information for family historians and community researchers who are interested in the ‘hidden histories’ of the psychological impact of the First World War.

This talk is for you if you wish to find out more about our First World War ancestors and the lasting effects of the conflict on their psychological health.

Suitable for all levels of family history experience.
