‘If only I had known my local archives had …’ We all know that ‘not everything is online’ and that there is a historic wealth of treasures to be found in our local archives. Knowing what’s where can be a challenge though. To that end the Family History Federation have appointed Dr Sadie McMullon as Archives Liaison Officer. See how she’s planning to help us all.
In her role as Archives Liaison Officer for the Family History Federation, Dr Sally McMullon's role is to try to ensure that family historians, and in particular members of family history societies, become increasingly aware of the 'name rich' projects that are taking place.
The Family History Federation's goal in appointing a dedicated Archives Liaison Officer is three-fold.
Firstly, to liaise with archives for news of their current name-rich and other transcription projects of interest to the family history sector, so as to share this news with family historians.
Secondly, the Family History Federation, via Sadie's Archives Liaison role, wish to reach out to support archives who may be seeking resources to help them accomplish valuable transcription projects. The Federation's support could take the form of volunteer recruitment, technical knowledge or funding.
Thirdly, Sadie would like to throw open the floor to ideas, and very much wishes to hear from archives, and fans of archives, of ways in which the Family History Federation (with its network of family history societies, their members and experts) can help to support archives.
For the moment Sadie is feeling her way, getting the lie of the land, gathering a database of on-going, future and wish list projects. In the first instance she will share news of her progress via the Family History Federation's enewsletter, which you may sign up to at https://www.familyhistoryfederation.com/
Looking to the future, Sadie hopes to be able to channel a rich stream dedicated to archives' project news and share this via a bi-monthly enewsletter.
We will also be sharing news of Sadie's work, and ways in which you can become involved, in future issues of Family Tree.
