TOWERING ABOVE THE LANDSCAPE

A new chapter in local history is about to be revealed. The clock is ticking ever closer towards a special weekend in West Berkshires history.

September is the month during which the areas wartime history is delivered through a series of fascinating presentations which include a one act play based on the story of the Home Guard and a lunchtime recital based on the famous home front concerts given by British pianist Dame Myra Hess.

However, the link between the town of Newbury and the airfield at Greenham Common is being rekindled in effect when the airfield control tower opens to the public and war walks of the site are being given to coincide with their legacy, our history during the weekend of 8 and 9 September 2018.

Visitors to the town during the event will be able to travel to Greenham on a period bus which will operate a regular service between the Corn Exchange and the control tower car park. 'This is an extension to the event in the town and a very important opportunity to embrace the history of Greenham with the towns wartime history. We want to ensure that new and existing audiences can learn more about how the town and airfield functioned together during those challenging years’ said Laura Adamson, Events Manager for Newbury.

Here at Family Tree, we are giving away copies of our ‘Exploring the Archives’ DVD’s which will be available to everyone booking tickets for the Greenham vintage bus service.

There is already a small Greenham display in the West Berkshire Museum and visitors will be able to watch original footage taken at the airfield in the build up to D-Day. Living history re-enactors in American uniform will add to the experience.
