Researching your family’s historic roots in China

Researching your family’s historic roots in China

Writer and historian at Bristol University Professor Robert Bickers will be speaking on ‘China Families: researching ancestors in China’s foreign communities’ at Family Tree Live

Introducing Professor Bickers’ talk:

This talk will interest you if your ancestors lived in China or Hong Kong.

Tens of thousands of foreign nationals lived in China in the century before 1949.

Merchants, Customs officers, policemen, missionaries, soldiers, sailors, diplomats and many others lived and worked in the country. Many are buried there.

A surprising range of materials survives to help you explore their lives in times of peace and war.

In his talk Professor Bickers will cover:

  • The history of the foreign communities in China
  • Different types of records to use to research the experience of your ancestors in China including a new platform, China Families
  • Death and memorial records
  • Newspapers and directories
  • Useful research tips
