Throughout November we're celebrating the 40th anniversary of Family Tree, and we want you to help us! Share a photo and story of a favourite ancestor and you (and your ancestor) could feature on the Family Tree website, social media and emails, and in the magazine!
Family Tree magazine was founded way back in 1984, and we're celebrating the brand's 40th anniversary throughout November with a range of promotions, competitions and challenges.
Share their stories
We want you to share your ancestors' stories with us and encourage others to do the same.
Family Tree's Matt Hill said:
"Our 40th anniversary is the perfect time to really promote family history and spread the word about the appeal of tracing your family story. We're calling on Family Tree's many loyal followers to share photos and brief stories about an ancestor, and will be using the results to encourage newcomers to find out more about their ancestry."
To get involved, just follow the quick checklist below:
- Email a photo of your chosen ancestor and a brief summary (up to 30 words) to [email protected]
- Please confirm that you give permission for us to use the photo and text on all Family Tree platforms
- These include: Family Tree magazine, www.family-tree.co.uk website, Family Tree email newsletter, Family Tree social media platforms
- We will be in contact to let you know when and where we will be sharing your ancestor photo and story
- We'd also love you to share the stories on social media, using the hashtag #sharetheirstories and #FamilyTree40th
Matt continued: "We're hoping to create a video collage using many of the photos and stories, and are also looking forward to sharing these tales form the past on our social media platforms, via our popular email newsletter, and on the Family Tree website."

Family Tree at 40
When Family Tree was established, way back when in the autumn of 1984, by former paramedic, fish & chip shop owner, and avid family historian, Michael Armstrong, on his kitchen table, it was the start of a genealogy adventure.
That first issue was a slight publications – just 32 pages, largely in black and white, with just a bold spot colour on the cover. Full colour printing was yet to arrive on the pages of Family Tree, and, to be fair, full colour printing had yet to be adopted widely in magazines and newspapers. 1984 is a long time ago in terms of publishing.
The magazine may have had small beginnings, but it had big ambitions, with Michael proudly proclaiming it to be ‘The British Magazine with the International Flavour’ and in the intervening decades, Family Tree has gathered readers from all corners of the globe. Today its website visitors, webinar audiences, online course students and Family Tree Plus members come from many countries worldwide.
