John’s two-part DNA Masterclass will:

• Guide you through the methods and tools to exploit your Y DNA test results better.
• Look at online tools to investigate your Y haplogroups.
• Show you how to use different kinds of Y DNA reference trees available online.
• Explain the most efficient ways to use the results from a 37 or 111 marker test.
• Clarify which benefits come from upgrading to the Big Y.
• In addition, John will look at how you can run a small-scale surname project for your own immediate surnames of interest, as well as how to tap into the big established surname and haplogroup projects.

There will be hands-on exercises guided by the instructor, and we will finish with a peep into what the future might hold for Y DNA testing.

How to take part in the DNA Masterclass

The DNA Masterclass will take place on Zoom on Thursday 20 and 27 February 2025, 7-9pm UK time with John Cleary.

About the speaker

Associate professor John Cleary is speaker and writer on using DNA in ancestral research based in Scotland, and is a contributing author to the very popular book published by Pen & Sword DNA: A Guide for Family Historians. He has presented on genetic genealogy at events in the UK, Ireland and the USA including Genetic Genealogy Ireland, Family Tree Live and seminars for the Guild of One Name Studies. He is involved with a number of Y DNA surname projects including the names Cummings, Kemp and Ó Cléirigh.
