More than a century's worth of Greater Manchester Electoral Records have been added to FindMyPast this week.

This brand-new collection for Greater Manchester, with images and transcriptions to view, covers 1820-1940. They are ideal for tracing anyone in between census years, plus, as they contain full addresses, they are handy for house history too. You’ll typically find an ancestor’s name, home address, township and ward.

The original images could contain even more information, such as ‘nature of qualification or nature of the property rated.’ Until 1918, the right to vote was closely link to property ownership. This detail on the registers is used to clarify whether the person owned a property or paid rent above a specific rate that made them eligible for voting.
