Highgate Cemetery
Do you have ancestors from Greater London who lived between 1399 and 1992? FindMyPast's latest release covers more than 2 million Greater London burials.
The collection is called The Greater London Burial Index and it comprises a collection of the Middlesex Burials & Memorial Inscriptions, South London Burials Index 1545-1905, City of London Burials 1754-1855 and Middlesex Burials 1538-1992.
What information is included?
The records, which were provided by The National Archives and created by the College of Arms, include details found in the original parish register which may include:
- Name
- Age
- Occupation
- Religious denomination
- Where buried
The records include those of George Wombwell (1777-1850), the famous Victorian menagerie exhibitor, who was buried in Highgate Cemetery in 1850. He was the founder of the famous Wombwells Travelling Menagerie, which enthralled Victorian audiences. Wombwell is buried in an unusual tomb that features a reclining lion.
How to search the records
The record set comprises over two million names from over 300 parishes in the Greater London area. The records include Anglican and non-conformist parishes.
Note that the ‘Parish’ field refers to a burial ground, which includes Anglican parish churchyards as well as other types of graveyards and cemeteries.
