Findmypast's new global family tree is a product that is being created to help both new and experienced genealogists collaborate with others to discover more about their ancestors.
The new project was announced at RootsTeach 2018 and currently, the tree is in beta phase, meaning that users can explore the three and search for ancestors, and later this year will be able to add details of their own ancestors. Once the tree is officially launched anyone with a family tree on FindMyPast will have the option to merge their current tree into the world family tree.
Users are invited to:
1. Find your ancestors and their heritage through time, from the 1.4 billion records already contributed
2. Connect with others and explore your shared trees
3. Contribute your research and enrich the tree with photos and discoveries
FamilySearch, who curate the world's largest family tree, with 1.2 billion unique ancestors, are described my FindMyPast as being the 'cornerstone' of the new global family tree, for which they have given the common goal: to spend less time searching for ancestors and more time discovering and connecting.
What about information on living relatives?
FindMyPast says: ' Living people’s information is treated differently for privacy reasons. There are restrictions on how broadly the information is available, depending on who contributed it. Information about deceased individuals can be viewed and edited by anyone.'
