Do you love to learn more and more about your ancestors? To help you get started with your genealogical studies, we’ve rounded up some of the best online learning experiences (many of which are even free to access). Check out what’s on offer, to find out what’s best to help you move your family history research up a level…
There are many online tutorials, lectures and webinars available. These are very helpful for starting to learn about a new topic, and for opening your eyes to areas you may wish to study further on a course.
Ancestry Academy
The Academy has a wide range of readily available videos covering specific national/topical research guides. Some of the Academy material is available to the public, some to Ancestry paid-up/premium users only.
Legacy Family Tree Webinars
The free online Legacy Family Tree Webinars cover all sorts of useful family history topics - from newbie research, to DNA or guides to using genealogy giant website FamilySearch.
The National Archives
Find audio and video podcasts from lectures and webinars at The National Archives free online, covering a feast of topics, from Hearth Tax to shell-shock, DNA to the Victorian workhouse.
Dear Myrtle
Genealogy blogger and YouTuber, Pat Richley-Erickson (aka Dear Myrtle) regularly posts helpful family history learning content (eg to help you wrestle with organising your files, or tackling a brick wall).
FamilySearch Learning Centre
Explore the hundreds of free ‘online genealogy courses to help you discover your family history’, 37 of which are specific to the UK, with many others to take your research overseas.

Check out your local family history society, museum and archives, for lectures and courses to help you learn about your ancestors.
